New Zealand Float Trips
We offer one of the only float fishing trips in New Zealand using drift boats and it’s something we are very passionate about. We can run anything from single day floats along a short section of river through to multi-day trips camping beside the water. Floating is a great option for anglers looking for something different to NZ’s traditional walk-wade fishing, especially anglers with physical disabilities. Well suited to fly fishing and spin fishing.
Walk & Wade Fly Fishing
Without a doubt the mainstay approach to fly fishing for trout in New Zealand. We can provide traditional walk-wade guided fishing across numerous rivers and streams in our region. Southland has some of the more technical fisheries in the country by New Zealand standards, so knowing what’s happening with the insect life and matching the hatch is often a precursor for successful fly fishing.
Fiordland Wilderness Fishing
Fiordland boasts some truly wild and rugged places to pursue trout. Most of these locations are only accessible via helicopter, float plane or water-taxi. We offer single day or multi-day overnight trips into some of the best fishing locations in Fiordland National Park. Adventuring into this untamed part of Aotearoa is not for the faint hearted and highly weather dependent.
Accommodation Packages
Our week long “Southland Sampler” trip is a great option for people visiting our region for the first time as it includes a mix of walk-wade fishing, float trips and jet boat fishing based out of boutique farmstay accommodations. We can also arrange custom packages to suit clients looking for high end luxury lodges through to DIY accommodation options (e.g. Hotels or AirBnB’s) on a budget.
Hunting Packages
We are based on the Southernmost big game hunting park in New Zealand, so can arrange anything from free range hunts for Red Deer, Fallow Deer, Arapawa Ram, Fiordland Merino Ram, Pacific Goat and Wild Pig through to trophy Stag and Wapati hunts. Hunting can be a stand alone activity or incorporated into your fishing itinerary.
Non-Angler Activities
There are numerous great adventures and experiences to add into your itinerary to keep non-anglers captivated. Day trips into Milford and Doubtful Sounds, tramping Fiordland’s tracks, farm tours, exploring Glowworm caves, kiwi spotting or an Eco jet boat tour down the famous Wairaurahiri River are just the tip of the iceberg.

About the S² Experience
We are a pukka guide service based on a red deer and sheep station in the remote southwest corner of New Zealand’s South Island. From our home base beside the Waiau River, the options for piscatorial pursuits in the Southland and Fiordland region can seem endless. Our region is known as the strong hold for wild Brown Trout and indeed, this reputation is well deserved with Southland having some of the highest densities of brown trout in Aotearoa. Nearby rivers such as the Oreti, Aparima, Mararoa, Waiau and Mataura are well known for their fabulous fishing. S² also has access to a private Fiordland hunting estate where both free range and trophy hunts can be provided. Whether walk wading up a lowland river, adventuring up a rugged backcountry stream, enjoying the pace of a leisurely float down our home river, hunting your first red deer or stalking the stag of a lifetime, we have options available to suit all clients aspirations and abilities.
